OUR DIRECTOR'S
COMMENTARY:
Last issue, we left your poor Executive Director -- that's me
-- in "the green room" (the make-up facility) of a major, NYC
TV studio, preparing for the first interview on his nationwide,
book-promotion tour. He was sitting in a growing puddle of cold
sweat, developing a massive case of stage fright. I was about
to venture forth to teach New York City how to heal itself of
any and all ailments. And I had just under four minutes of precious
air-time to do it.
Rrrright!
Almost unconsciously, as I had so often done before, I began
to massage G-Jo point #13 -- located in the webbing between the
thumb and pointer finger on the back of the hand (please see the
illustration of this point at our free, basic G-Jo teaching site:
www.g-jo.com/points.html).
Not surprisingly, I soon began to feel better and more relaxed.
Fortunately, within a few minutes, I was "back to myself," again
...
... and when I was called onto the stage, I walked comfortably
and confidently in front of the camera ... and into the career
which would occupy so much of my working life!
Fast-forward 25 years. Today, knowing what I've learned since
that first, fateful moment in my "public" career, I would have
used something considerably more elegant to deal with stage-fright.
Or with ANY kind of emotional distress, for that matter.
It's called "Emotional Freedom Technique" ... or by those in
the know, simply "EFT". You could also call this a kind of "do-it-yourself
acupressure instant psychotherapy."
To use this remarkably easy and effective self-health technique,
several special acupressure-type points -- located primarily on
the face and hands -- are not massaged, but TAPPED, in a certain
sequence. At the same time, while tapping, the sufferer either
verbally or silently repeats specific affirmations directed toward
the problem at hand.
The keys to this affirmation are two-fold: It must acknowledge
the immediate problem; yet at the same time, one still must affirm
oneself as being both healthy and otherwise OK. Important to note:
The sufferer doesn't actually need to BELIEVE the good things
s/he's affirming about him- or herself... but this affirmation
DOES need to be said while the tapping's being done, nonetheless.
For example, to erase the stage-fright I had been feeling, I
would begin by tapping on EFT's special group of acupoints (perhaps
half a dozen, in all). And while doing so, I would repeat to myself
something like: "Even though I feel nervous and upset about appearing
in front of a TV camera, I love and accept myself fully and completely."
Tapping, alone, is normally not enough. Nor is just repeating
the affirmation without the tapping sequence.
But when these, two steps are combined, the resulting "magic"
can be positively awesome!
Even longstanding phobias (e.g., fear of flying, riding on elevators
or escalators, indeed virtually ANY nagging fear, dread, obsession,
trepidation or emotional distress) can actually vanish ... often
in seconds! Yes, vanish. And yes, in seconds! This technique is
truly THAT powerful!
It is a most bizarre experience, trust me: To be feeling a sense
of dread or despair, at one moment, then -- following EFT's simple
routine -- to be essentially free of that suffering a few seconds
later.
I was first introduced to the forerunner of this technique --
which was called "Thought Field Therapy" or "The Callahan Technique"
-- through a videotape produced by its creator, a psychotherapist
named Dr. Roger Callahan. Claims for its effectiveness that were
nothing short of outlandish were being trumpeted loudly by Dr.
Callahan in a full-page advertisement in a New Age magazine.
Yet they were claims I couldn't ignore. For I, myself, had made
just as many seemingly-outlandish boasts about the effectiveness
of G-Jo Acupressure ... and I knew for a fact that THOSE claims
were true. So was it possible that a five-minute acupressure-type
treatment really COULD sidestep years of costly psychotherapy,
as claimed by Dr. Callahan (and later, by the EFT "guru," Gary
Craig)?
Experience now tells me "definitely yes!" ... but with several
caveats. First, you need to be trained in the basics of this technique,
since both the points and the types of affirmations are quite
specific.
And while the technique CAN be learned by reading, alone, it's
a BIG help to be trained by an experienced EFT professional ...
or at least through a video on the subject. But having the help
of a live therapist or trainer will make it easier to craft the
right affirmations for yourself.
This training doesn't usually take long -- minutes, not hours,
in some cases. Nonetheless, it'll usually cost a bit of money
-- that's the bad news.
The good news is that this training doesn't need to be done in
person -- doing it by telephone can work equally well ... assuming
you know the right acupoints to tap, and the right sequence in
which to tap them. Then, once you have it under your belt, you
can use EFT on yourself (or a loved one), any time and any place.
Gary Craig ( www.emofree.com
) has trained and organized a large and growing group of EFT practitioners.
And most of those featured on Craig's website -- like Craig, himself
-- seem determined to share this remarkably easy technique to
the widest, possible audience. You, yourself, might wish to become
such a trainer.
Of course, we understand and applaud this commitment to low-cost,
universal, self-reliant wellness. And why not?: This is the same
basis upon which we founded and have always operated The G-Jo
Institute!
In fact, one person closely associated with our Institute as
a Certified Instructor of G-Jo Acupressure is herself an EFT therapist
and trainer. Diane Ruby, MS, is our neighbor, long-time friend
and frequent volunteer, here, at the Institute.
Early on, Diane began training in first the Callahan methods,
then EFT, incorporating them (along with G-Jo) into her original
work as a community college counselor. She now has an active,
successful EFT counseling and therapy practice, both in-office
and by telephone.
So through her experiences, we have come to know both the benefits
(many) and the drawbacks (few) of this most unusual self-help
technique. Indeed, the one drawback we've heard is that it helps
greatly to have illustrations in front of you as you follow EFT's
tap-and-recite routine.
It is the same problem we ran into years ago, in teaching radio
audiences the six, most broad-acting G-Jo Acupressure points.
We finally addressed it by putting our "Mini Crash-Course in G-Jo
Acupressure on-line at www.g-jo.com/points.html
.
And Diane will soon have those critical drawings on a new website
that is under construction. But for now, she simply does what
we did for many years: Mails out or faxes copies of a drawing
of the necessary tapping points to her telephone clients. Other
EFT therapists (and we'd love to know about any who teach both
G-Jo and EFT) apparently handle this problem in a variety of ways.
Diane may be reached by phone at (828) 859-2520. If you do contact
her, please let Diane know you found her through this newsletter.
We receive nothing for the mention, of course; but your interest
in EFT helps us to know that you'd like to learn more about other
interesting types of self-health methods and practices we've uncovered
over the years ... and perhaps some of our own experiences with
them.

for everyone. Spiritual yoga has nothing to do with exercise,
but is the underlying basis of the yoga classes you may now be
attending.
Here's your chance to learn more about this ancient science.
Each week, we e-mail a special list of people a segment from Michael
Blate's "A Yogi Explains 'The Bhagavad-Gita': Enlightenment for

yoga and its timeless wisdom.
We continually "recycle" Michael's book so that you can jump
in at any time, and still be assured of eventually receiving the
entire text. However, this cycle takes nearly two years to complete.
But if you're a person who likes to "start at the beginning,"
now's your opportunity!
This month marks the next kick-off of a new "Gita cycle." And
if you want to join our growing list of weekly readers, simply

TESTIMONIAL DU JOUR:
"Last night my wife complained about having one
of the worst back aches ever. I had cut out the G-Jo article from
a local paper; it identified back pain relief. I used point #5
and within two minutes she said, 'I think it's gone.' She stood
up and it *was* gone. We were both amazed." G.H., Wayne, PA

AN INTRODUCTION TO YOUR
G-JO POINTS:
G-Jo Acupressure Point Number 8
MERIDIAN POINT NUMBER: Vessel of Conception
1 (VC-1) / IXV 1
CHINESE NAME: "Meeting of Yin" (or "Seabed"
or many others -- these translations are taken from "Grasping
The Wind," by Andrew Ellis, Nigel Wiseman and Kenn Boss; Paradigm
Publications)
LOCATION: Midway between the anus and the
sex organ, atop the crease-like tissue (perineum).
USES: This G-Jo point has at least 14 Basic
G-Jo uses, one of which is to self-treat various prostate problems
in males.
INSTRUCTIONS: Because of its location, this
is a seldom-used point; but when stimulated, its effects can be
dramatic, particularly in cases where life has apparently just
suddenly ceased, say from drowning or suffocation. To find this
point upon yourself, first read the instructions. Then, using
the TIP of the index (or other) finger -- even the eraser tip
of a pencil -- begin pressing deeply midway between the rectum
and sex organ, feeling for a dull, aching sensation.
Use deep pressure -- up to 15 or 20 lbs.
might be needed to both find and "trigger" this (and many other)
G-Jo points. The point itself, once contacted, will feel like
a toothache or pinched nerve -- definitely more tender than the
surrounding flesh.
For more complete instructions, go to www.g-jo.com/points.html
and take our free "Mini Crash-Course in G-Jo Acupressure." This
G-Jo Point (and nearly 200 others) is illustrated and described
in "The Master of G-Jo Acupressure Home-Study Certification Program."
This low-cost program is available from The G-Jo Institute via
the order page on our website
or through our contact information at the
end of this newsletter.
The G-Jo Institute is approved by The National Certification
Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) as a continuing
education provider. The "Master of G-Jo Acupressure Home-Study
Certification Program" may qualify in your state for up to five
C.E.U's (50 hours of study--see information and
statement below).

A WAY OF EATING FOR PLEASURE
AND HEALTH: Each issue, we present a wholesome, nutritious
recipe which our family, friends and guests have enjoyed over
the years at both Falkynor Farm, and more recently, here, at DeerHaven
Hills Farm & Yoga Eco-Center. This issue's presentation ranks
close to the top of our list of favorites:
LIMA BEAN STEW
Serves 6
3 10-oz packages frozen lima beans
4 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into 3/4" dice
2-3 cups veggie stock or water
1 large onion, chopped
4 large yellow (summer) squash, cut into 3/4" dice
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 10 oz package frozen green peas
3 Tbsp butter
3 Tbsp sweet onion mustard (such as Vidalia) OR country style
mustard with sweetener and onion powder added
2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
2 Tbsp Bragg's Liquid Aminos or soy sauce
1 Tbsp (or to taste) Herbamare or salt
2 Tbsp sorghum or other mild (not blackstrap) molasses
Hot pepper sauce to taste
In a large pot, cook lima beans in stock or water
until tender. Add potatoes and continue to cook until tender.
Meanwhile, in a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium high
heat until hot but not smoking. Add onions and saute until lightly
browned. Add squash, reduce heat, and continue to cook until vegetables
are tender.
Add onion/squash mixture, plus peas and all remaining
ingredients, to lima/ potato pot. Bring to a boil and simmer for
10-15 minutes, adding more water if necessary. Taste and adjust
for seasoning. We like to serve this over pasta. Serves 6.

KNOW YOUR ORGANS:
HEART, continued
G-Jo point #8 -- the subject of this issue -- relates
to the so-called "Vessel of Conception" which, like its "companion,"
the "Governing Vessel," is neither an actual organ nor gland.
Instead, these are acupuncture "meridians" or pathways of life-force
and vital energy.
Because of this, neither the Vessel of Conception
nor the Governing Vessel is deeply discussed in the Advanced G-Jo
section of our Master of G-Jo Acupressure Home-Study Certification
Program, from which most of the following information is drawn.
So we continue our discussion about the heart (which is considered
to be the "king of organs," according to many acupuncturists).
The heart has many physiological functions, of course.
One of the primary physical jobs of this organ team (i.e., the
heart and its "wife," the small intestine) relates to the development
of blood and its transportation system (i.e., the blood vessels).
In upcoming issues, we will cover many more of the
physical qualities the heart manifests and controls. But because
of our discussion, above -- about the use of acupressure and EFT
to heal emotional distress -- we will focus on the psychological
importance of the heart and small intestine.
As you may recall from earlier issues of this newsletter,
in acupressure and acupuncture theory, each organ team is said
to have one or several common emotions associated with it. The
heart-team, of course, is no exception.
For example, a person who "has no spirit" -- no
zest for being alive -- is said to be, in part, suffering from
a malfunction of the heart team. And in many cases, feelings of
sadness are said to arise from heart malfunction or imbalance,
too.
Further, still, the heart is said to serve the additional
function of being at the center of our entire emotional life (as
well as our physical existence). Because of this close association
with the psychological element of life, ANY extreme emotion can
thus abuse the heart and its mate.
Take deep and longstanding depression -- an emotional
state normally linked to the liver and gall-bladder team. If left
unchecked, depression can eventually "spill over" to injure the
heart and small intestine. This is when "the blues" go black.
So it might seem reasonable to deduce that all we
need to do to help ease any chronic emotional problem is to simply
use some specific G-Jo points to help balance the heart and small
intestine. But like most problems of the body-and-mind, or bodymind,
it is not so simple a matter to heal chronic or longstanding emotional
distress.
This is because the heart's influence is subtle,
far-reaching, profound. Because of this, it is not easily "adjusted"
... even by those who have mastered G-Jo Acupressure. In fact,
our students are always warned that the heart, itself, should
NEVER be treated DIRECTLY, except by professionally-trained acupuncturists
(who normally undergo years of rigorous training, like all other
physicians).
Even then, an acupuncturist might choose to treat
the heart indirectly, by way of its so-called "protector," the
pericardium (which will be discussed in upcoming issues). In short,
treating the heart directly is almost NEVER a first choice!
By now it should be clear: Acupuncturists believe
that emotional distress normally has a physiological basis. We
all know that a combination of wrong foods, poor "health-style"
and other factors can affect both the body AND the mind adversely.
But not all of us realize the actual method by which
this occurs.
Such abuses do their harm by causing the organs
and glands to under- or over-react. In so doing, they produce
a "biochemical soup" that is too rich in some chemicals and too
lean in others.
The result is an ever-changing, chemically-induced
emotional state which may be linked to something as simple as,
say, last night's piece of chocolate cake ... or the biochemical
"leftovers" following an argument with one's boss ... or a "hidden"
allergic reaction to a glass of milk ...
... And when such abuses become a regular part of
one's life, an "acute" emotion can become chronic.
Because of that, a longstanding emotional problem
could be the direct result of an allergic reaction to a regularly
eaten food.
As we have seen, a person suffering from emotional
distress can sometimes be treated and at least temporarily healed,
using "acupressure psychotherapy," such as the EFT system discussed,
above. But many problems need a more complete approach -- one
that deals with both the physiological as well as psychological
elements of the issue.
One such method is the Organ Balancing routine which
accompanies our Master of G-Jo Acupressure Home-Study Certification
Program. Here, a much more "physical" approach is taken to the
problem of emotional suffering -- something for which acupuncture-
and acupressure-therapy is famous.
Using that program, a series of organ-related points
is triggered one or more times a day for up to several weeks.
Later, the routine is repeated every few days, then only occasionally,
as it helps restore ENTIRE bodymind balance, not just for one
organ, gland or problem.
To be continued ...
All the body's major organs and glands, along with their many
functions, are completely described in the Advanced G-Jo section
of "The Master of G-Jo Acupressure Home-Study Certification Program."
